Another important thing to consider when formulating a dream is the inevitability of mistakes. In the 20-year interval for which we calculate a personal strategy, there will be at least one long-term and at least three medium-term economic cycles, so you will in any case have to live through at least three or four serious crises, during which you will have to reassess tasks and resources, abandon tools that have become unworkable and look for new ones.
Your dream may become obsolete, irrelevant, or at least substantially changed.
But the most serious risk lies in the very nature of the future-to-present approach. When you build a “stalagmite,” you are building on what you know for sure. This is why, although your options for the future are limited, you are much less likely to make a mistake with this approach.

When you build a stalactite, there is no solid footing. You are forced to base your dream on assumptions and hypotheses, or even pure imagination. So it is possible that when you achieve what you want, the reality will turn out to be quite different from what you imagined it to be.
It is impossible to minimize this risk with the help of rational calculation, because the dream, as we said above, necessarily contains an irrational, emotional component. You can only grasp it empirically.
Simply put — by giving it a try.
That is why you will need to realize one or more “pilot projects” in order to verify the dream that will become the basis of your personal strategy.
Dream of living in a house by the sea? Start by renting it. And it is best not in the peak tourist season, but just when the pleasant weather and entertainment for vacationers do not prevent a closer look at the domestic nuances of living on the coast.
Want to move to another country? Live there for a few months first. Again, it is better not as an idle tourist, but by finding a productive occupation: study or a local project. This way you will be able to assess the quality of the educational infrastructure or business environment and understand how comfortable you are working with the locals and interacting with the authorities.

Want to pursue a career in public administration? Try working as an assistant to a State Duma deputy or getting elected to the regional Legislative Assembly.
Want to invest in a new, promising direction in business? Try to realize a smaller-scale pilot project first.
Of course, all of the above applies to quite concrete desires: it is not so difficult to find a way to test them in practice. This is not the case with dreams of a higher level of abstraction. You can rent a yacht of some Forbes list figure, but not his wealth or influence. Imagination is also not too helpful here: he needs some food, but where will it come from, if you do not even know a single billionaire?
So you have to have one. This is the solution to the problem: if there are no ways to verify the dream directly, we will have to make do with indirect methods — observation of others, imitation and approximation.
Of course, the effectiveness of the test will not be the same as when verified by personal experience, but it will still help to avoid many illusions and misconceptions.
